Mamma Mia! filming in Damouhari

The filming of scenes for the English musical production Mamma Mia!, which took place at the hamlet of Damouhari in Mouresi area on Eastern Pelion coast in Greece, was a great success. The natural hamlet lived an era of vivid artistic activity with actress Meryl Streep in the leading role, accompanied by a plethora of artists, cast and crew.

During the filming of the scenes, the hamlet of Damouhari was crowded with hundreds of local women and children that aided the development of the local live footage for the film. The filming started with a scene of small fishing boats escorting the boat that brings the daughter of the leading actress to the hamlet of Damouhari. Thoughout the filming, the music of ABBA on which the musical Mamma Mia! is based upon, continuously filled the air of the set, with ABBA's Benny Anderson giving a live touch on the spot with his piano.

According to the screenplay, the daughter of the leading actress pays her mother (Meril Streep) a visit at her house on a Greek island (Damouhari) were she came on a small boat in quest of her physical father. This mother - daughter reunion initiates a local feast, and all women abandon whatever they were doing to live a moment of liberation, dancing and singing the all-times-classic ABBA dancing hit "Dancing Queen" at the harbor and along the alleys of the island.

The filming of the scenes in Damouhari was concluded on September 29th.

Pelion remains green and enchanting

Mayor of Mouresi Municipality, Pelion, Mr. Constantinos Leventis has announced the following regarding the fires in Pelion:

"Putting ahead the responsibility towards our guests and the perspective for local growth, we are obliged to inform everyone that Pelion remains green, enchanting and mythical as always. The last days there has been an excessive coverage by the media about the fires destroying part of Pelion Mountain, which do not reflect the reality.

It is a certain fact that a part of the wild forest along with some cultivations on a non fertile area were indeed damaged from fires, a fact which has caused a great regret to all.

In order to restore the truth and to fully inform the citizens and visitors, we are aware that all tourist destinations, mountainous and coastal along with every single settlement and village do remain intact and ready to accommodate all guests and friends of the area.

Finally, I personally believe that over-reacting and exaggerating does not help towards an objective fact update, but arouses worries and misleads the community and tourism."

Walking in Pelion

Mount Pelion has a great number of trails and paths suitable for hikes, horse ridding and mountain bike of a small scale. The cobbled paths and trails together with the Volos-Milies railway, used to be the only axis of communication between the villages and Volos capital during the 50’s. Despite the years that passed by, many of the traditional paths are still in very good shape due to efforts done by local communities. These paths give the visitors the chance to explore the mountain in safety, from a close distance.
Every step of the way is described by text, photo(s) and map position.
