The Greek fire police is giving a battle over tens of fire fields across the country since yesterday's burning hell over parts of Greece's mainland.
In the Southern parts of Pelion mountain the fire has caused a mass destruction, destroying tens of cottages and houses until now, including
Prodromos monastery and the pine forest of
Neochori. The ring of fire includes also parts of
Kalamaki, Lambinou, Xinovryssi and
Syki areas, the last one also cut off by power and water supplies.
The efforts to seize the fire include 123 fire fighters with 49 trucks, 87 persons (ground force) and 100 soldiers, plus two fire fighting airplanes and one helicopter doing water drops from the air in
Neochori and Kalamaki and three more airplanes and one helicopter in
Milies.
Greek minister of public order, Vyron Polidoras, on his exit from the urgent meeting with prime minister Karamanlis said today that a tough battle is being given over the fires throughout the country with average success and that all the fire areas are being dealt successfully in the most cases except the case of Pelion. The meeting has taken place in order to estimate the situation about the fires over the Nation.
