Walking in Pelion
| Mount Pelion has a great number of trails and paths suitable for hikes, horse ridding and mountain bike of a small scale.
The cobbled paths and trails together with the Volos-Milies railway, used to be the only axis of communication between the villages and Volos capital during the 50's.
Despite the years that passed by, many of the traditional paths are still in very good shape due to efforts done by local communities. These paths give the visitors the chance to explore the mountain in safety, from a close distance. |
The hiking routes and their descriptions
The routes described here were field-examined and recorded by a specialized, professional mountain-guide during May - Sept. 2006. These routes do not require any necessary experience for anyone who likes to walk and are suitable for everybody.
We have recoded each route step-by-step, focusing on the junction points where one is likely to lose the trail easier. Every step of the way is described by text, photo(s) and map position. |
Hiking routes
The described hiking routes hereunder are of the most characteristic for the East Pelion Mount, Mouresi Municipality area.
The direction of each description is done bearing in mind the difficulty level and the best combination of the available means of transport for its realization.
Warning: The navigation data as well as the ground types descriptions may in some cases differ from the ones presented on map. In such case we assume the text descriptions as the most accurate ones. The map was digitized using aerial imagery of the area which, in some cases, couldn't help us determine the exact junction points or ground types due to thick flora coverage. Nevertheless, using additional geographic data resources and the supervision of our local mountain guide, we are confident to have sufficiently covered the hiking routes mapping task.
What we try to do, is give someone the chance to follow the route and be able to keep on the pathways (trails) without the need of any special navigation knowledge.
Best time to visit - Equipment
These short routes, are accessible all year round as they are in low altitude, with the exception of routes "Chania - Kissos" and "Milies - Tsagarada" that are in higher altitudes and during winter are propably covered by snow.
Appropriate hiking equipment is a must in order to avoid any unnecessary hardship or trouble.
You will need:
- comfortable shoes (even simple sports shoes with non-slippery soles will do)
- a daypack
- a first aid kit
- some water and
- a light wind resistant jacket are necessary for a pleasant hiking.
It is recommended to check the weather forecast before setting off, as well as to inform a friend or your hotel receptionist on which route you are planning to follow.
Enjoy your hike!
