Overview
Mouresi settlement (or Morris, as it was known during the Ottoman Empire) seems to have its roots at the port of Damouhari. The first inhabitants of the area built their settlements at Damouhari bay. Because of the raids of pirates, they were forced to find safer places to live higher on the hills. At the time of the Turkish Occupation, the area was dedicated to Muslim temples, known as "Vakoufia", self ruled and tax-exempted, contrary to "Chassia" witch belonged to the Turkish Crown and enjoyed fewer privileges. The economic development of Mouresi was rapid, especially during the 17th century. This was due to the agricultural yields, as well as the production of silk. As the architect Argyris Filippidis informs us, during the Turkish occupation, the production of silk and leather were very important.
Mouresi is one of the most picturesque villages in the east side of Pelion. We have little information about the residential development of this area. However, the discovery of a tomb with an unpainted ancient pot proves that it was inhabited since ancient times. Unfortunately excavation works were discontinued, and we don't have any other finds. Mouresi is an ideal place to set out walking tours. Guided tours start from here and the travelers can enjoy traditional tasty foods at the small tavernas.
